Sunnah Ta‘awwudh to Recite at the Start of Salah

❖ The Sunnah Supplication of Ta‘awwudh at the Beginning of Salah

✦ The Supplication of Ta‘awwudh and Its Meaning

◈ Narration from Hadith:

It is narrated from Abu Sa‘eed al-Khudri رضي الله عنه that:

When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would stand for prayer at night, he would begin by saying the Takbeer (i.e., “Allāhu Akbar”), and then recite the following Ta‘awwudh:

اَعُوْذُ بِاﷲِ السَّمِیْعِ الْعَلِیْمِ مِنَ الشَّیْطَانِ الرَّجِیْمِ مِنْ هَمْزِهِ وَنَفْخِهِ وَنَفْثِهِ

Translation of the Ta‘awwudh:

“I seek refuge in Allah, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing, from the accursed devil — from his whisperings, his arrogant breaths, and his poetic mischiefs.”

✦ Reference:

  • Abu Dawud, Kitab al-Salat, Bab man ra’a al-istiftah bi Subhanaka, Hadith 577
  • Declared authentic (ṣaḥīḥ) by Ibn Khuzaymah, Hadith 764

✦ Significance:

This Ta‘awwudh is a Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, recited at the beginning of Salah, to seek protection from the whisperings and evil of Shayṭān.
It ensures spiritual focus and shields the believer from distraction and misguidance during prayer.
