Question:
If a person wishes to recite a Sunnah supplication while lowering the deceased into the grave, what should be said?
Answer:
Ḥaḍrat ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما narrates that the Noble Prophet ﷺ said:
“When you lower your dead into the grave, say:
«بسم الله وعلٰي سنة رسول الله»
And in another narration:
«بسم الله وعلٰي ملة رسول الله»
[Abū Dāwūd, Kitāb al-Janaʾiz: Bāb fī al-duʿāʾ lil-mayyit idhā wuḍiʿa fī qabrihi, ḥadīth 3213; Ibn Mājah 1550; al-Tirmidhī 1046; Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān 773; Ḥākim 1/366; Bayhaqī 4/55; Aḥmad 2/27, 40]
In another narration:
«الميت اذا وضع فى قبره فليقل الذين يضعونه حين يوضع فى اللحد: بسم الله وبالله وعلٰي ملة رسول الله»
“When the deceased is placed in the grave, those lowering him into the laḥd should say: ‘Bismillāh wa billāh wa ʿalā millati Rasūlillāh.’”
[Ḥākim 1/366]
From these narrations, it is established that those lowering the deceased into the grave should recite these supplications, as they are from the Sunnah.
