Sunnah Supplications at Iftar and Ruling on Responding to Adhan

✦ The Importance of the Time of Iftar

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!

The time of Iftar is extremely blessed and a special moment for the acceptance of supplications. At this time, the worship of fasting reaches its conclusion, and due to physical weakness, a person is in a state of humility and submission. This emotional and physical state draws a person closer to Allah ﷻ with greater focus and sincerity.

✦ Sunnah Supplications at the Time of Iftar

There are two narrations of supplications from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that are reported for the time of Iftar:

❀ First Supplication:

«اَللّٰهُمَّ لَکَ صُمْتُ وَعَلٰی رِزْقِکَ اَفْطَرْتُ»
(Sunan Abī Dāwūd, Kitāb al-Ṣiyām, Bāb al-Qawl ʿInda al-Iftār, Ḥadīth: 2358)

Translation:
“O Allah! I fasted for You and with Your provision I broke my fast.”

❀ Second Supplication:

«ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ، وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوْقُ وَثَبَتَ الْأَجْرُ اِنْ شَاءَ اللّٰهُ»
(Sunan Abī Dāwūd, Kitāb al-Ṣiyām, Bāb al-Qawl ʿInda al-Iftār, Ḥadīth: 2357)

Translation:
“The thirst has gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is confirmed, if Allah wills.”

Although there is some weakness in the chains of narration for both of these Hadiths, certain scholars have classified them as ḥasan (acceptable in grade). Therefore, reciting these supplications at the time of Iftar is a correct and blessed act. In addition to these, a person may also recite other Sunnah or appropriate supplications, as this is a special moment for asking from Allah ﷻ and seeking His mercy.

✦ Responding to the Adhan at Iftar

If the Adhan is heard at the time of Iftar, then responding to the Mu'adhdhin is also recommended and in accordance with the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ. It is narrated in a Hadith:

«إِذَا سَمِعْتُمُ الْمُؤَذِّنَ فَقُولُوا مِثْلَ مَا يَقُولُ»
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Adhān, Bāb Mā Yaqūlu Iḏā Samiʿa al-Munādī, Ḥadīth: 611; and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Ṣalāh, Bāb Istihbāb al-Qawl Mithla Qawl al-Muʾaḏḏin, Ḥadīth: 384 – wording from Muslim)

Translation:
“When you hear the Mu’adhdhin, then say what he says.”

This instruction is general and applies in all conditions, unless there is a clear evidence of exemption. Hence, even during Iftar, responding to the Adhan is a Sunnah act and can be combined with the supplication or act of breaking the fast.
