Sunnah Ruling on Beard Length and Moustache Trimming

Excerpted from the book: Aḥkām wa Masā’il – In the Light of the Qur’an and Sunnah by Shaykh Mubashar Ahmad Rabbani

❖ Question:

What has the Prophet ﷺ instructed regarding a man who keeps a moustache?
And how long should the beard be kept? A certain scholar said that the beard must be one fist long and not shorter than that — is this correct? Please explain with evidence from Qur’an and Sunnah.

❖ Answer:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ clearly instructed that both trimming the moustache and letting the beard grow are part of the natural disposition (fiṭrah) of Islam.

1. Trimming the Moustache & Growing the Beard is from Fiṭrah:

The Prophet ﷺ said:

«عَشْرٌ مِنَ الْفِطْرَةِ: ... قَصُّ الشَّارِبِ وَإِعْفَاءُ اللِّحْيَةِ...»
“Ten acts are from the natural disposition (fiṭrah)... trimming the moustache and letting the beard grow.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Ṭahārah, Bāb Khaṣāl al-Fiṭrah, ḥadīth 261]

2. Command to Let the Beard Grow and Trim the Moustache:

From ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar

“Oppose the polytheists: let your beards grow and trim your moustaches.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, ḥadīth 5892, 5893]
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, ḥadīth 259/54]

In another narration:

«أَعْفُوا اللِّحَى، وَجُزُّوا الشَّوَارِبَ»
“Let the beards grow and cut the moustaches.”

3. Opposing the Jews and Christians:

From Abū Umāmah

“We said: O Messenger of Allah, the People of the Book shave their beards and let their moustaches grow!
The Prophet ﷺ replied:
‘Trim the moustaches, grow the beards, and oppose the People of the Book.’
[Musnad Aḥmad 5/264–265, ḥadīth 22639]

❖ Ruling Derived from These Aḥādīth:

These aḥādīth clearly show that:
① Trimming the moustache and
② Letting the beard grow
are part of Islamic fiṭrah (natural way).

Whereas:

  • Shaving the beard or
  • Growing the moustache
is opposing the Sunnah and imitating Jews and Christians.

Hence, a person who grows his moustache and does not trim it is in violation of the clear command of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

Disobeying the Prophet ﷺ is not a minor matter. Allah warns:

“So let those beware who oppose his command, lest a trial afflict them or a painful punishment befall them.”
Surah al-Nūr (24:63)

❖ How Long Should the Beard Be?

The Prophet ﷺ gave five different verbal instructions regarding the beard:

  • «أعفوا»

These all command to:
“Let the beard grow freely,”
“Leave it,”
“Let it hang down,”
“Give it fullness,”
“Do not cut it short.”

Imām Nawawī رحمه الله explains:

“All five terms carry the meaning of leaving the beard in its natural state, and their literal wording indicates a clear command to do so.”
[Sharḥ Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim]

❖ Is the "One Fist" Rule a Limit?

Some scholars have stated that one should let the beard grow at least one fist in length, and that shortening it beyond that is impermissible, except for trimming what exceeds a fist — and this is based on the action of ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar

However, the Prophet ﷺ himself never limited the beard to a specific measurement.
Rather, the authentic ḥadīths consistently state to “let it grow” — which clearly implies that cutting it short or shaving it is against the Sunnah.

✅ Summary:

Trimming the moustache and growing the beard is part of Islamic fiṭrah, and a clear Sunnah command of the Prophet ﷺ.
Shaving the beard or letting the moustache grow long is imitation of non-Muslims and disobedience to the Prophet ﷺ.
✔ The correct approach is to leave the beard to grow naturally without restricting it to a specific length unless it exceeds excessive length, as per some Ṣaḥābah.
✔ Statements like "keep only one fist length for more reward" are not proven from the Prophet ﷺ.
