Sunnah Method of the Right Hand During Tashahhud

Source: Aḥkām wa Masāʾil – Discussion on Ṣalāh, Vol. 1, p. 199

❖ Question:

What should be the position of the right arm/hand during the final tashahhud in prayer?

❖ Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʿammā baʿd!

The authentic aḥādīth mention different ways regarding the position of the right hand during tashahhud. The most reliable and practiced methods are two:

① The “53” Formation (ترپن کی صورت)

  • The thumb is placed on the root joint of the index finger (sabābah).
  • The other three fingers (middle, ring, and little finger) are curled inward toward their bases.
  • The index finger is extended to point.

② The Circle (حلقہ بنانے کی صورت)

  • The index finger (sabābah) is kept extended and pointing.
  • The thumb and middle finger are joined at their tips to form a circle.
  • The remaining two fingers (ring and little finger) are curled inward toward their bases.

✅ Conclusion

Both of these methods are authentically reported in aḥādīth, and a person may follow either one.
