❖ Extracted from: Ṣaḥīḥ Namāz-e-Nabawī ﷺ, authored by Shaykh ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ʿAzīz, published by Maktabah Dār al-Andalus
✿ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
إذا جاء أحدكم الجمعة فليغتسل
“When any one of you comes for Jumuʿah, let him perform ghusl.”
[Bukhārī: 877, Muslim: 844]
✿ If someone is unable to perform ghusl due to necessity, performing wuḍūʾ is also permissible.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
من توضأ فبها ونعمت، ومن اغتسل فهو أفضل
“Whoever performs wuḍūʾ has done well; and whoever performs ghusl, that is better.”
[Abū Dāwūd: 354, Tirmidhī: 497, Nasāʾī: 1381 – Ḥasan]
✿ However, it should not be left out due to laziness since the Prophet ﷺ emphasized its virtue.
✿ One should use a miswāk and apply fragrance if available.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
الغسل يوم الجمعة واجب على كل محتلم وأن يستن، وأن يمس طيبًا إن وجد
“Ghusl on Friday is obligatory for every adult, and that he uses a miswāk and applies perfume if available.”
[Bukhārī: 880, Muslim: 846]
✿ One should wear clean and good clothing on Friday.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“If possible, let him keep aside two garments specifically for Friday separate from his work clothes.”
[Abū Dāwūd: 1078, Ibn Mājah: 1095–1096 – Ṣaḥīḥ]

✿ The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever performs ghusl on Friday, then goes early, walks (not rides), sits close to the Imām, listens attentively and refrains from idle talk, he will receive the reward of a year’s fasting and night prayer for every step he takes.”
[Abū Dāwūd: 345, Tirmidhī: 496, Nasāʾī: 1399, Ibn Mājah: 1087 – Ṣaḥīḥ]
✿ The Prophet ﷺ said:
تقدَّموا فالتمسوا بي، وليأتمَّ بكم من بعدكم، لا يزال قومٌ يتأخرون حتى يؤخِّرَهم الله في النار
“Move forward and come closer to me, and let those after you follow you. A people who habitually lag behind will be pushed back by Allah into the Hellfire.”
[Muslim: 438, Abū Dāwūd: 679 – Ṣaḥīḥ]
✿ Jābir رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ once addressed the congregation while Sulaik al-Ghaṭafānī رضي الله عنه entered and sat down.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“O Sulaik! Stand and offer two brief rakʿāt.”
Then he ﷺ added:
“If any one of you comes to Jumuʿah while the Imām is delivering the khuṭbah, let him pray two short rakʿāt first.”
[Muslim: 875/59]
✿ The narration prohibiting prayer after the Imām ascends the minbar is baseless.

✿ The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever performs wuḍūʾ well, then comes for Jumuʿah, listens attentively to the khuṭbah, his sins between this Jumuʿah and the next will be forgiven – along with an additional three days. But whoever plays with pebbles has engaged in laghw (idle behavior).”
[Muslim: 857/27]
✿ He ﷺ also said:
إذا قلت لصاحبك يوم الجمعة انصت، والإمام يخطب فقد لغوت
“If you say to your companion ‘Be quiet!’ while the Imām is delivering the khuṭbah, you have also done laghw.”
[Bukhārī: 934, Muslim: 851]
✿ And he ﷺ warned:
من لغا وتخطى رقاب الناس كانت له ظهرا
“Whoever engages in laghw or steps over people's necks (to find a place), he will have only the reward of Ẓuhr, not Jumuʿah.”
[Abū Dāwūd: 347 – Ḥasan]
✔ One should stop all recitation and prayer once the khuṭbah begins.
✖ Raising slogans during the khuṭbah
✖ Speaking with others upon arrival
✖ Using miswāk while the khuṭbah is ongoing
✖ Sitting in a posture where knees are hugged and stomach is pressed
✿ Muʿādh رضي الله عنه said:
“The Prophet ﷺ forbade sitting during the khuṭbah with one's knees held by arms and pressed against the stomach (iḥtibāʾ).”
[Tirmidhī: 514 – Ḥasan]
✿ Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī رضي الله عنه said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ascended the minbar to give the khuṭbah while we sat around him.”
[Musnad Aḥmad: 3/21, Ḥadīth: 11174]
✔ The attendees should face the khāṭib (Imām) during the khuṭbah.
✔ If there is a need, one may address the Imām during the khuṭbah.
✿ Anas رضي الله عنه narrated:
“While the Prophet ﷺ was delivering the Friday khuṭbah, a man stood up and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! Our horses and sheep are dying, please supplicate to Allah for rain.’ The Prophet ﷺ raised his hands and made duʿāʾ.”
[Bukhārī: 932, Muslim: 897]
❖ Purification for Jumuʿah
✿ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
إذا جاء أحدكم الجمعة فليغتسل
