❀ Sunnah Supplications During Wudu and Their Shar‘i Validity ❀
From: Fatāwā al-Dīn al-Khāliṣ, Vol. 1, p. 348
❖ Question:
What are the authentic Sunnah supplications during wudu according to the noble Sunnah? Are there prescribed duas for each limb?
✔ Answer:
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, and blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. To proceed:
Number of Sunnah Duas in Wudu
There is no authentic evidence in the Qur’an or sound ḥadīth that specific duas are to be recited while washing each limb during wudu. This detailed practice is found only in later scholarly writings, and is not established by the Sunnah.
Instead, only three (3) authentic supplications related to wudu are reliably proven from the Sunnah.
➊ At the Beginning of Wudu: Saying “Bismillah”
Hadith Evidence:
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"There is no prayer for the one without wudu, and there is no wudu for the one who does not mention Allah’s name."
(Abū Dāwūd: 101, al-Tirmidhī: 25, Ibn Mājah: 397)
Imām al-Tirmidhī quoted Imām al-Bukhārī, who said:
“The narration of Rabāḥ in this chapter is the best.”
However, the majority of scholars consider it recommended (sunnah/mustaḥabb).
➋ After Completing Wudu: Declaration of Faith
"أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له، وأشهد أن محمدًا عبده ورسوله"
Hadith Evidence:
Narrated from ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (رضي الله عنه):
“Whoever performs a complete wudu, then recites this supplication, the eight gates of Paradise will be opened for him.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 234)
Additional Supplication (Reported in al-Tirmidhī but Weak):
"اللَّهُمَّ اجعلني من التوَّابين، واجعلني من المتطَهِّرين"
Though weak, it is supported by corroborating reports, as noted in:
- Irwāʾ al-Ghalīl
- ʿAmal al-Yawm wa al-Laylah by Ibn al-Sunnī
➌ Another Supplication After Wudu
"سبحانك اللهم وبحمدك، أشهد أن لا إله إلا أنت، أستغفرك وأتوب إليك"
Hadith Sources:
- ʿAmal al-Yawm wa al-Laylah (al-Nasāʾī, ḥadīth no. 81)
- al-Ḥākim
- al-Ṣaḥīḥah of al-Albānī (ḥadīth no. 2233)
The ḥadīth mentions:
“Allah seals it (the wudu) and stores it beneath the Throne, where it remains until the Day of Judgement.”
Supplications That Are Not Established
- Reciting Surah al-Qadr during wudu
- Specific duas for each limb, such as:
- “Allāhumma bayyiḍ wajhī” (O Allah, brighten my face)
- “Allāhumma aʿṭinī kitābī bi-yamīnī” (O Allah, give me my record in my right hand)
➡ These supplications are based on weak or fabricated narrations, and not to be practiced.
Looking Toward the Sky After Wudu?
There is a narration in:
- Abū Dāwūd
- Musnad Aḥmad
- Al-Dārimī
“Whoever performs wudu, then looks up toward the sky and recites…”
However, this narration includes a majhūl (unknown) narrator, making the addition rejected (munkar).
Hāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar also criticized this narration in al-Talkhīṣ al-Ḥabīr (1/102).
Important Note:
- Raising the index finger,
- Facing the qiblah,
- Reciting specific duas during each limb wash
are not proven from any authentic hadith.
➡ Only those duas mentioned above are part of the Sunnah. All other practices are either exaggerations or bordering on bidʿah (innovation).
Conclusion:
✔ Three authentic supplications related to wudu are established:
① At the start: “Bismillah”
② At the end: “Ashhadu an lā ilāha illā Allāh…”
③ Also at the end: “Subḥānaka Allāhumma wa biḥamdik…”
