Strong Belief as Protection from Trials and Fitnah

Strength of Belief and Protection from Trials (Fitnah)

Source: Fatāwā Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri

❖ Question:

Is it true that the stronger a person’s belief (ʿaqīdah), the less he will fall prey to trials (fitnah)?

❖ Answer:

Yes, this is correct. It is through the strength of faith (īmān) that a person gains awareness regarding trials and is able to protect himself from them.

Evidence from Hadith

Sayyidunā Ḥudhayfah ibn al-Yamān (RA) narrates regarding the Dajjāl:

مكتوب بين عينيه كافر، يقرؤه كل مؤمن، كاتب وغير كاتب .

“Between the eyes of the Dajjāl will be written the word kāfir (disbeliever). Every believer will be able to read it, whether literate or illiterate.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 2934)

Scholarly Explanations

Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله, d. 728H) said:

دل على أن المؤمن يتبين له ما لا يتبين لغيره؛ ولا سيما فى الفتن وينكشف له حال الكذاب الوضاع على الله ورسوله .

“This Hadith proves that the believer perceives what others cannot perceive, especially in times of trials. The state of the liar who fabricates against Allah and His Messenger becomes clear to him.”
(Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā: 20/45)

Ḥasan al-Baṣrī (رحمه الله) said:

إن هذه الفتنة إذا أقبلت عرفها كل عالم، وإذا أدبرت عرفها كل جاهل

“When a trial first emerges, every knowledgeable scholar recognizes it. But when it passes, only then do the ignorant realize it.”
(Ṭabaqāt Ibn Saʿd: 7/165, chain authentic)

Key Principle

There are only two means of protection from trials:
Knowledge of Prophethood (ʿilm al-nubuwwah)
Faith (īmān)

Without these two, there is no path to recognizing or safeguarding oneself from fitnah.

✅ Conclusion:
The stronger a person’s īmān and sound belief, the greater his ability to recognize and withstand trials. Faith and prophetic knowledge are the only true shields against fitnah.
