Status of Reciting Ta‘awwudh Before Qur’ān Recitation

Shumara al-Sunnah, Jhelum

✿ Question:

What is the ruling on reciting Ta‘awwudh before Qur’ān recitation?

✿ Answer:

It is recommended (mustaḥabb) to recite Ta‘awwudh before reciting the Qur’ān. Allah ﷻ says:

﴿فَإِذَا قَرَأْتَ ٱلْقُرْآنَ فَٱسْتَعِذْ بِٱللَّهِ مِنَ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنِ ٱلرَّجِيمِ﴾
[An-Naḥl: 98]

"When you recite the Qur’ān, seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Satan."

✿ Commentary by Scholars:

Imām Ibn Kathīr (701–774 AH) said:
"This is a directive from Allah ﷻ through His Prophet ﷺ to His servants: when they intend to recite the Qur’ān, they should seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Satan. This is a recommended act, not obligatory. Imām Abū Ja‘far Ibn Jarīr al-Ṭabarī and other scholars have reported consensus on this matter."
[Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr: 4/602, under Sūrah An-Naḥl]

✿ Practice of the Salaf:

The practice of the Salaf (righteous predecessors) indicates that reciting Ta‘awwudh is recommended.

If the recitation is interrupted due to a necessity — such as someone asking a question or a discussion about the recitation — repeating Ta‘awwudh is not necessary, as the entire session is considered one recitation.

However, if there is a long pause or unrelated speech, then Ta‘awwudh should be repeated.
