Derived from: Fatāwā ʿIlmiyyah, Vol 1, Kitāb al-ʿAqāʾid, p. 214
Is it permissible to speak while performing Wudū or during a meal?
Alḥamdulillāh, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allāh. To proceed:
There is no authentic prohibition in the ḥadīth that forbids speaking while performing Wudū, as long as the speech is appropriate.
Al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah (رضي الله عنه) reported:
The Prophet ﷺ performed Wudū, and when he was about to wash his feet, I reached out to remove his leather socks. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Leave them. I put them on in a state of purity.”
Then he wiped over them.
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 206, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 79/274)
This narration clearly proves that speaking during Wudū is permissible, as the Prophet ﷺ spoke to his companion while performing it.
However, one should avoid unnecessary or idle talk, as pointless speech is discouraged in all situations.
ʿUmar ibn Abī Salamah (رضي الله عنه) narrated:
I ate with the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ one day, and I began eating from different parts of the dish. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said:
“Eat from what is in front of you.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 5377, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 2022)
This ḥadīth shows that speaking during meals is also permissible, as the Prophet ﷺ gave advice and taught etiquette during the act of eating.
✔ It is permissible to speak during Wudū, as established by the Prophet’s ﷺ interaction with his companions during it.
✔ It is also permissible to speak during meals, especially when the conversation involves good manners, teaching, or meaningful communication.
✔ Idle, unnecessary, or inappropriate talk is always discouraged, whether during acts of worship, eating, or any other time.
