Speaking During Salah is Prohibited

Hadith Reference:

It is narrated from Zaid bin Arqam (رضي الله عنه) that he said:
"We used to talk during Salah. A person would speak to the one standing beside him in Salah, until the verse was revealed:
وَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ (‘Stand before Allah in obedience.’) [Al-Baqarah: 238]
Then, we were commanded to remain silent and were prohibited from speaking during Salah."

(Sahih al-Bukhari: 1200, 4534 | Sahih Muslim: 539)

Key Lessons:

Speaking in Salah is prohibited. This includes all forms of conversation, whether intentional or accidental.

Complete silence must be maintained during Salah.

  • Before this command, it was permissible to converse in Salah.
  • However, after the revelation of Al-Baqarah: 238, speaking was entirely forbidden.
The Hadith of Dhul-Yadain – which relates to unintentional speech in Salah – will be discussed separately.
