Sitting in the Mosque Without Wudu: Scholarly Consensus

❖ What is the Ruling on a Person Without Wudu Sitting in the Mosque? ❖

Source: Fatāwā Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri

Question:

What is the ruling on a person without wudu sitting in the mosque?

Answer:

A person without wudu may sit in the mosque; wudu is not a condition for sitting in the mosque. However, one upon whom ghusl is obligatory may not sit in the mosque.

❀ Ḥāfiẓ al-Nawawī رحمه الله (d. 676H) said:
أجمع المسلمون على جواز الجلوس فى المسجد للمحدث.
“The Muslims are unanimous that it is permissible for a person without wudu to sit in the mosque.”
(Sharḥ Muslim: 3/192)

✅ Conclusion:
Sitting in the mosque does not require wudu, but those in a state of major impurity (requiring ghusl) are not permitted to do so.
