Fatwa by: Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, Sheikh Muhammad bin Salih al-Uthaymeen
Question:
It often happens that a person intends to do a good deed, but then Satan whispers in their heart that they are doing this for show, fame, or ostentation. In this way, Satan keeps us away from doing good deeds. How can one avoid such thoughts?
Answer:
These are satanic whispers. To avoid them, one should recite "A'udhu billahi min ash-shaytan ir-rajim" (I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Satan) and then engage in the good deed. One should not pay attention to such thoughts that prevent a person from doing good. When a person recites the ta'awwudh (seeking refuge), with Allah's command, all satanic efforts will be nullified. (Insha'Allah).
