Silent Recitation of Opening Du‘as in Audible Prayers: A Qur’anic and Prophetic Practice

📖 Rulings on the Opening Supplication (Dua al-Istiftah) in Audible Prayers
✍️ Derived from: Fatawa Ulama-e-Hadith, Kitab al-Salah, Volume 1

❖ Question:

In audible (Jahri) prayers, is there any Hadith that proves the Imam or the follower (muqtadi) should recite “Subhanak Allahumma” or other opening supplications silently?

❖ Qur’anic Principle on Dhikr and Du‘a:

The general principle regarding remembrance (dhikr) and supplication (du‘a) is mentioned in the Qur'an:

"Call upon your Lord with humility and in secret. Indeed, He does not like the transgressors."
(Surah al-A‘raf: 205)

📌 This applies to all forms of dhikr and du‘a, including the opening supplications in Salah such as “Subhanak Allahumma”.

❖ Silent Recitation of Opening Supplications in Salah

✔ For du‘as that are proven to be recited aloud through Qur’an and Sunnah, they must be recited aloud.
✔ However, “Subhanak Allahumma” and similar opening invocations are not narrated with loud recitation.
✔ The practice of the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions consistently indicates that such du‘as were recited silently — even in audible prayers like Fajr, Maghrib, and ‘Isha.

❖ Summary:

✔ According to Qur'anic instruction and Sunnah practice, “Subhanak Allahumma” and other opening du‘as in Jahri prayers are to be recited silently.

✔ There is no authentic evidence that the Prophet ﷺ or his Companions recited these du‘as aloud in such prayers.

✔ Therefore, the Imam and the follower both should recite these silently, unless a clear and explicit proof justifies audible recitation.
