By ʿAbdullāh Yūsuf Ẓahabī
The Prophet ﷺ saw a man fighting alongside the polytheists and said:
“A servant may do what people see as the deeds of the People of Paradise, yet belong to the People of Hell, and vice versa—and deeds are judged by their endings.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6493)
“Whoever’s last words are ‘Lā ilāha illā-llāh’ will enter Paradise.”
(Sunan Abī Dāwūd 3116—ḥasan; Musnad Aḥmad 5/247; al-Ḥākim 1351—ṣaḥīḥ)
❀ Prophetic Confirmation:
When ʿUmar رضي الله عنه saw Ṭalḥah رضي الله عنه distressed, he reminded him of this hadith and its promise of light in the record and ease at death.
(Sunan Ibn Mājah 3795; Sunan an-Nasā’ī 271/6 #10940—ḥasan)
② Declaring the Shahādah with Conviction
“Whoever dies testifying that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah—firmly in their heart—Allah will forgive them.”
(Sunan Ibn Mājah 3796—ḥasan)
③ Sweating on the Forehead at Death
“A believer dies with sweat on their forehead.”
(Sunan an-Nasā’ī 1829–30; at-Tirmidhī 982—ṣaḥīḥ)
—Scholars explain this sweat may indicate the soul’s departure or the cleansing of sins.
④ Dying on Friday (Day or Night)
“Whoever dies on Friday day or night, Allah will save them from the trial of the grave.”
(at-Tirmidhī 1074; Musnad Aḥmad 2/189—ḥasan)
⑤ Martyrdom in the Path of Allah
(Âl ʿImrān 169–171)
✔ Sixfold Virtue of a Shaheed:
—Also: dying under the blade of the sword suffices for martyrdom; falling from one’s mount in jihad counts as well (Bukhārī, “Faḍl man yuṣraʿ fī sabīlillāh wa māta”).
⑥ Dying in Righteous Deed
“When Allah intends good for a servant, He grants them righteous deeds before death.”
(at-Tirmidhī 2142)
❀ Example: Being immersed in prayer, fasting, charity, or dhikr at the moment of death.
⑦ Dying of Plague
“Plague was a punishment that Allah made a mercy for the believers: whoever remains patient in a land afflicted, knowing nothing will befall them except what Allah has decreed, will have the reward of a martyr.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5734—ḥasan)
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5732; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1914)
⑧ Dying by Other Means Counted as Martyrdom
The Prophet ﷺ listed seven causes of martyrdom besides fighting in Allah’s way:
“O Allah, grant me martyrdom in Your path and let me die in the city of Your Messenger.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1890)
Ameen.
① Life’s Ups and Downs
There is no permanence in any human life—neither in one’s inner state nor in one’s deeds. Fluctuations are natural, driven by environment, companionship, and circumstances. A righteous person may slip momentarily, and a sinner may repent swiftly. History records both types of transformations.② Focusing on One’s Final Outcome
Islam teaches believers to be mindful of their end, for that is where true accountability lies. One may perform righteous deeds until the gates of Paradise, then commit a grave error and fall into Hell; another may sin until the brink of Hell, then perform one final deed that secures Paradise.❀ Ṣahl ibn Saʿd رضي الله عنه reports:
The Prophet ﷺ saw a man fighting alongside the polytheists and said:

(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6493)
③ Overview of Ḥasan al-Khatimah
Shaykh al-Albānī in his Kitāb al-Janāʾiz enumerates several signs of a good end. We summarize his list and supplement it where relevant.④ Key Signs of a Good End

✔ Sixfold Virtue of a Shaheed:
- Forgiveness at the first drop of blood
- Seeing one’s place in Paradise
- Protection from the grave’s torment
- Safety from the Great Terror
- Adorning with the robe of faith
- Marriage to the Ḥūr al-ʿĪn and intercession for seventy relatives

- Plague
- Drowning
- Illness of the side (pleurisy)
- Stomach disease
- Burning
- Crushing under collapse
- Complications of childbirth
(Sunan Abī Dāwūd 3111; Ibn Mājah 2803—ḥasan)
⑤ Conclusion & Dua
May Allah grant us a good ending—to die with the Shahādah, in obedience, or in one of the above righteous circumstances.
“O Allah, grant me martyrdom in Your path and let me die in the city of Your Messenger.”
