Should You Obey a Mother Who Is Not on the Straight Path?

❀ Obeying a Non-Religious Mother: Islamic Guidance ❀

Source:

This article is derived from the book 500 Questions and Answers for Women, based on the Fatwas of the scholars of the Haramain. The translation was done by Hafiz Abdullah Saleem.

❖ Question:

My mother is not on the straight path. Whenever I advise her, she gets upset with me and does not speak to me for days. How should I make her understand without causing her displeasure, which may lead to Allah’s displeasure? Or should I leave her alone so she remains pleased with me, and thereby Allah is pleased as well?

❖ Answer:

Continue to advise your mother repeatedly and explain to her that her actions lead to sin and divine punishment. If she refuses to accept your advice, then inform her husband, father, or guardian so they may advise her.

If your mother is committing a major sin (kabīrah), then there is no harm in distancing yourself from her. Any curses or accusations she directs at you regarding disobedience or severing ties will not harm you, because your actions are based on protecting your faith and denouncing evil for the sake of Allah.

However, if she is not involved in any major sin, then you do not have the right to sever ties with her.
