Should a Widow Marry a Man of Bad Character in Islam?

šŸ“š Excerpt taken from Shaykh Mubashir Ahmad Rabbani’s book: "Ahkām wa Masā’il – In the Light of the Qur’an and Sunnah"

ā– Question:

A young woman whose husband has passed away has received a marriage proposal from a man who is addicted to smoking and known for his bad character and poor conduct. The woman herself is inclined toward accepting this proposal and is willing to marry him. However, her guardians and other close family members are not satisfied with the man’s behavior and habits, and they are trying to prevent the marriage. What does Islamic law say regarding such a situation?

ā– Answer:

It is obligatory upon the guardians (awliyā') of this woman to prevent her from marrying such a man whose bad habits and poor conduct are well known, as he will negatively influence her character and way of life.

The woman herself should be advised to seek a righteous and well-mannered man, one who is known for his religious commitment and noble character, as prescribed in the teachings of Islam.

🟢 Islam encourages marriage based on piety, good morals, and responsible character, not mere emotional inclination or temporary attraction.
