Does Shayṭān provoke anger in people?
Yes, Shayṭān provokes anger and inflames emotions, as explicitly stated in the Qur’ān.
Allah ﷻ says:
“And if an evil suggestion comes to you from Shayṭān, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is Hearing and Knowing. Surely, those who fear Allah—when a thought of Shayṭān touches them—they remember, and then they see clearly.”
[Al-A‘rāf: 200–201]
The phrase وَإِمَّا يَنزَغَنَّكَ refers to a situation where Shayṭān stirs within you intense anger, such that ignoring the behavior of an ignorant person becomes difficult.
In such a state, Allah commands:
فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّهِ
“Seek refuge in Allah.”
➤ The word ʿiyādh (عياذ) means to plead for protection from evil.
➤ True safety lies only in seeking shelter with Allah from Shayṭān’s incitement.
إِذَا مَسَّهُمْ – “When a whisper from Shayṭān touches them,”
According to some scholars, this refers to Shayṭān’s overpowering influence on a person’s thoughts and emotions.
✔ But those who are mindful of Allah (the muttaqūn) become aware and alert,
✔ And through remembrance (dhikr), they regain clarity and insight.
➤ Shayṭān influences anger, provokes reactions, and disrupts judgment.
➤ But the remedy is seeking refuge in Allah, developing taqwā, and remembering the reality of Shayṭān’s deception.
Yes, Shayṭān does incite anger, especially in moments of confrontation and emotional vulnerability.
However, the God-conscious believer responds with dhikr, patience, and refuge in Allah, thereby gaining clarity and spiritual strength.
