Does Shayṭān come to the son of Ādam even in the grave?
It is narrated from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, who said:
"I was present with Ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما at a funeral. When the deceased was placed in the laḥd (grave niche), he said:
«باسم الله وفي سبيل الله وعلى ملة رسول الله،»
Then when the bricks of the laḥd were arranged properly, he said:
«اللهم أجرها من الشيطان ومن عذاب القبر، اللهم جاف الأرض عن جنبيها، وصعد روحها ولقها منك رضوانا.»
I (Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib) asked: 'O Ibn ʿUmar! Is this something you say from your own opinion, or is it something you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?'
He replied: 'Then indeed I would be capable of saying anything, but rather, it is something I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.'"
[Sunan al-Tirmidhī, Ḥadīth no. 323; Sunan al-Bayhaqī 4/55]
① This narration highlights that Shayṭān attempts to influence even in the grave, and it is from the prophetic guidance to seek refuge from him at that moment.
② Ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما’s supplication for protection from Shayṭān and punishment of the grave is traced back to the direct teachings of the Prophet ﷺ.
③ The supplication also includes asking for relief from the constriction of the earth, elevation of the soul, and attainment of Allah's pleasure.
