Shari'ah Ruling on Writing Petitions Based on False Claims

Author: Dr. Muhammad Zia-ur-Rahman A‘zami (رحمه الله)

❖ Writing Petitions (Documents or Applications) That Contain Falsehood

If you are writing petitions, documents, or applications for people based solely on what they dictate to you, and you have no knowledge that their claims contradict reality or truth, then there is no harm upon you. In such a case, you are not sinful, as there is no prohibition in doing so.

However, if you are aware that what they are asking you to write is false or deceptive, then it is not permissible for you to write it for them. Doing so would mean assisting them in falsehood and sin, which is clearly forbidden in Islam.

Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) says:

«وَتَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَىٰ ۖ وَلَا تَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ»

[Al-Mā'idah: 2]
"And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and transgression."

And He says:

«وَلَا تُجَادِلْ عَنِ الَّذِينَ يَخْتَانُونَ أَنفُسَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ مَن كَانَ خَوَّانًا أَثِيمًا»

[An-Nisā’: 107]
"And do not argue on behalf of those who deceive themselves. Verily, Allah does not love the one who is treacherous and sinful."

If you come to know that the claim being made is false, then:

Advise the person,
Remind him of Allah, and
Warn him about the consequences awaiting those who lie and support falsehood — perhaps he may take heed and refrain from his wrongdoing.
