Question

What is the ruling on walking quickly to the prayer?

Answer

Alhamdulillah, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ‘alā Rasūlillāh, ammā ba‘d!

It is generally discouraged to walk quickly to the prayer. The Prophet ﷺ instructed that one should go to prayer with calmness and dignity, and he forbade rushing or walking hastily.

Views of Some Scholars

◈ Some scholars permit walking briskly — as long as it is not considered improper — if there is a fear of missing the first rak‘ah.

◈ For example: If a person enters the mosque and the imam is in rukū‘, and he walks a little faster to catch the rak‘ah — provided the manner is respectful — then it is permissible.

However:

◈ Running or dashing into the mosque is prohibited, as it goes against calmness and dignity.

◈ Prayer requires composure and seriousness; rushing diminishes its spiritual essence.

Best Practice:

◈ The best and most virtuous way is to enter the mosque with calmness and dignity, even if a rak‘ah is missed.

◈ The general meaning of the hadith instructs that a person going to prayer should walk calmly and avoid haste.
