Shari‘ah Ruling on Taking the Wife’s Salary with Her Consent
✒ Fatwa by the Saudi Permanent Committee for Islamic Rulings
If your wife is intelligent and capable of managing her financial matters, then there is no harm in taking her salary with her full consent. Likewise, anything she voluntarily gives you as assistance, provided she is of sound judgment, is permissible for you to accept without any prohibition.
Allah ﷻ states at the beginning of Surah al-Nisāʾ:
﴿فَإِن طِبْنَ لَكُمْ عَن شَيْءٍ مِّنْهُ نَفْسًا فَكُلُوهُ هَنِيئًا مَّرِيئًا﴾
“But if they, of their own goodwill, remit any part of it to you, then enjoy it with pleasure and goodwill.”
(Sūrah al-Nisāʾ: 4)
This verse emphasizes that voluntary and heartfelt giving from the wife is lawful and wholesome for the husband to accept.
✔ Even if such giving is not documented with receipts or legal paperwork, it remains permissible if it is voluntary and consensual.
✔ However, if the wife provides written acknowledgment or receipts, it is considered more prudent — especially:
• If there is a concern from her family or relatives,
• Or if there is a possibility of her retracting the consent later.
And Allah knows best.
