Shariah Ruling on Supporting Shia Tabarrais and Its Grave Consequences

❖ Islamic Ruling on Supporting Shia Tabarrais and Its Consequences ❖

📚 Source: Fatāwā Shaykh al-Ḥadīth Mubārakpūrī, Volume 1, Page 156

❖ Question:

What is the ruling on supporting Shia (Tabarrai) individuals?

Clarification of the Issue:

A query was presented to the scholars:
In a gathering where seventy to eighty Sunni Muslims were present along with one Shia Tabarrai, a man named Zaid made the following statement in defense of the Shia:

“Shia believe in one of the four Rightly Guided Caliphs (رضوان الله علیہم) but not the other three—what difference does it make? Even a son abuses his father, yet what does that matter?”

❖ Question:

What is the Shariah ruling regarding Zaid’s statement in support of the Shia?

✔ Ruling on Zaid’s Statement and Action:

Zaid’s statement and his action are sinful and entirely contrary to Islamic honor and integrity.

Comparing the Shia’s cursing of the three Rightly Guided Caliphs to a son abusing his father is:

◈ An open transgression.
◈ Reflective of moral corruption and disgraceful behavior.
◈ A violation of Islamic ethics.

❖ Duty of the People:

People must:

Condemn such a person.
Stop him from this heinous act.

If he does not desist and insists on his position:

Sever all relations with him.

❖ Ruling on Shia Tabarrais and Their Supporters:

The same ruling applies to Shia Tabarrais and those who support them.

❖ Consequences of Tabarra (Cursing the Companions):

The three companions — Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, and ʿUthmān (رضي الله عنهم) — have been granted glad tidings of Paradise by the Prophet ﷺ.

Despite this, cursing them constitutes:

◈ A denial of the Prophetic truth.
◈ A rejection of established historical and religious facts.

❖ Zaid’s Support and Deviance:

Those Shia individuals who insult the Rightly Guided Caliphs are:

Deniers of the statements of the Prophet ﷺ.

Supporting such deviants, as Zaid did, is effectively a form of Rafḍ (sectarian heresy).

✔ Guidance for Zaid:

Zaid must:

Repent publicly in front of the Muslims for his sinful act.
Refrain from supporting Shia beliefs in the future.

If he refuses:

It becomes obligatory upon all Muslims to boycott him.

📖 Quranic Evidence:

﴿وَلا تَركَنوا إِلَى الَّذينَ ظَلَموا فَتَمَسَّكُمُ النّارُ﴾
(Hūd: 113)

“Do not incline toward those who do wrong, lest the Fire touch you.”

❖ Clarification Regarding Shia Tabarrais and Their Ruling

Some scholars have declared Shia Tabarrais as disbelievers.
Others have referred to them as:

◈ Innovators (بدعتی)
◈ Deviants (گمراہ)
◈ Misguided and misleading (ضال مضل)

❖ Harms of Supporting the Shia

Supporting them entails:

Kufr (disbelief) if done while affirming their doctrines.
Fusūq (sinfulness) and nifāq (hypocrisy) if done merely due to sympathy.
◈ Aligning with their misguidance leads to Hellfire.

Even if the individual:

✔ Prays regularly
✔ Performs other religious duties

— he is still:

Accursed
Misguided
◈ Deserving of divine punishment

❖ Obligation Upon Muslims:

It is obligatory upon Muslims to:

Avoid such oppressors.
Dissociate from those who support the cursing of the companions.

❖ Ruling on Cursing the Three Caliphs:

Cursing Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, and ʿUthmān (رضي الله عنهم) is Kufr (disbelief).

Slandering ʿĀʾishah (رضي الله عنها) is also Kufr.

📖 Reference:
Radd al-Muḥtār al-Shāmī states:

“There is no doubt in the disbelief of one who slanders Sayyidah ʿĀʾishah, denies the companionship of al-Ṣiddīq (Abū Bakr), believes in divinity for ʿAlī, or that Jibrīl made a mistake in delivering the revelation — all of which are blatant forms of Kufr contradicting the Qur'an.” (Summarized)

❖ Ruling on a Son Who Abuses His Father:

A son who abuses his father is:

◈ A transgressor and a sinner (فاسق فاجر).
◈ If he dies without repentance, he is liable to punishment.
