Question

During the obligatory prayers in Masjid al-Haram, some men are seen praying behind women’s rows. In such a case, is their prayer valid? And is there any Shariah justification for this practice?

Answer

Alhamdulillah, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ‘alā Rasūlillāh, ammā ba‘d!

Scholars have clarified this matter as follows:

◈ If men pray behind women, the prayer is still valid; Shariah has not declared it completely invalid.

◈ However, this arrangement is contrary to the Sunnah, as the Sunnah is that women should stand behind men, not the other way around.

Emphasis on Avoiding This Practice

◈ Although jurists have deemed a man’s prayer behind a woman valid:
❀ One should avoid this practice as much as possible.
❀ It can lead to potential fitnah (temptation), so men should refrain from such arrangements.
❀ Worshippers should follow the Sunnah method so both men and women remain protected from fitnah.

Guidance for Women

◈ Women should also avoid praying in areas too close to men so that modesty is maintained and the true spirit of worship is preserved.
