Reference: Ahkam wa Masail, Fasting Issues, Vol. 1, Page 288

❖ Question:

Can a person who shaves or trims his beard sit for iʿtikāf?

❖ Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

Such a person may perform iʿtikāf, but he must abandon the act of shaving or trimming the beard, because this practice is sinful.

The very purpose of iʿtikāf is to leave sins and turn wholeheartedly to Allah. Therefore, one who has the habit of shaving or trimming the beard should give up these sins during iʿtikāf so that his retreat becomes meaningful and in accordance with the Sharīʿah.

Hādhā mā ʿindī, wallāhu aʿlam biṣ-ṣawāb.
