❖ Legal Status of Continuous (Wisaal) Fasting and the Guidance of the Prophet ﷺ ❖
From: Fatāwā Arkān-e-Islām
❀ Definition of Wisaal Fasting
Wisaal fasting refers to the act of observing two or more consecutive fasts without breaking the fast in between. That is, a person does not break the fast at sunset and directly enters into the next day’s fast — making it a continuous fast without any interval of ifṭār.
The Prophet ﷺ explicitly prohibited the observance of Wisaal fasting. He ﷺ said:
«من أَرَادَ أَنْ يُوَاصِلَ فَلْيُوَاصِلْ إِلَى السَّحَرِ»
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Ṣawm, Bāb al-Wiṣāl ilā al-Saḥar, Ḥadīth: 1967)
“Whoever wishes to observe Wisaal should do so only until the pre-dawn (suḥūr).”
This means that one may extend the fast up until suḥūr, but fasting for two or more complete days without breaking the fast is not permissible.
The Prophet ﷺ only allowed Wisaal fasting until suḥūr, and that too not as a formal religious command but as a concession. The general teaching of the Sharīʿah is to hasten in breaking the fast. As the Prophet ﷺ said:
«لَا يَزَالُ النَّاسُ بِخَيْرٍ مَا عَجَّلُوا الْفِطْرَ»
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Ṣawm, Bāb Taʿjīl al-Ifṭār, Ḥadīth: 1957, and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Ṣiyām, Bāb Faḍl al-Suḥūr, Ḥadīth: 1098)
“People will continue to remain upon goodness as long as they hasten to break their fasts.”
When the Companions رضي الله عنهم mentioned to the Prophet ﷺ that he himself observes Wisaal, he ﷺ responded:
«إِنِّي لَسْتُ كَهَيْئَتِكُمْ»
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Ṣawm, Bāb Barakah al-Suḥūr fī Ghayr Ījāb, Ḥadīth: 1922)
“Indeed, I am not like you; my condition is different from yours.”
This signifies that the physical and spiritual strength of the Prophet ﷺ was far superior to that of ordinary human beings. Hence, his act of Wisaal was a special case, not a model for the Ummah to emulate.
Wisaal fasting — fasting continuously without breaking the fast — is prohibited in Sharīʿah.
Only fasting up to suḥūr has been granted as a concession, not as a regular practice.
The primary instruction remains to hasten in ifṭār and delay the suḥūr.

✦ Concept and Sharʿi Ruling of Wisaal Fasting
❀ Definition of Wisaal Fasting
Wisaal fasting refers to the act of observing two or more consecutive fasts without breaking the fast in between. That is, a person does not break the fast at sunset and directly enters into the next day’s fast — making it a continuous fast without any interval of ifṭār.
✦ Prohibition from the Prophet ﷺ
✦ Permission up to Suḥūr
✦ The Prophet ﷺ Himself Observed Wisaal
✦ Conclusion
Wisaal fasting — fasting continuously without breaking the fast — is prohibited in Sharīʿah.
Only fasting up to suḥūr has been granted as a concession, not as a regular practice.
The primary instruction remains to hasten in ifṭār and delay the suḥūr.
