❖ Question

What is the Shari‘ah ruling on naming a child “Muhammad Shafi‘”?

❖ Answer

Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ‘ala Rasulillah, amma ba’d!

Meaning of the Name

  • “Muhammad” is the blessed name of the Prophet ﷺ, highly virtuous and full of blessings.
  • “Shafi‘” is also one of the titles of the Prophet ﷺ, as he will intercede (shafa‘ah) on the Day of Judgment.
  • Combined, “Muhammad Shafi‘” means: “Muhammad, the intercessor.”

Shari‘ah Perspective

  • Using “Shafi‘” for the Prophet ﷺ is correct, as Allah has granted him the station of intercession.
  • However, for ordinary individuals, adopting such a name or presenting oneself with this title is not appropriate, because:
    • Not everyone can intercede in the court of Allah.
    • No person can claim the ability to intercede without Allah’s permission.

Conclusion

  • It is preferable to name simply “Muhammad” without adding “Shafi‘.”
  • Avoid including “Shafi‘” as part of a person’s name to prevent inappropriate implications.
