❖ Question:
Is it permissible under Islamic law to impose multiple punishments for a single proven crime, such as imprisonment along with a fine, or execution along with a fine? Please provide guidance on this matter.
❖ Answer by Shaykh al-‘Allāmah Ḥāfiẓ Muḥammad Ṭāhir ḥafiẓahullāh:
It is permissible for a single crime to carry more than one punishment.
However, if a particular crime does not involve any financial aspect, then imposing a fine as a discretionary punishment (تعزيراً) — referred to as "al-Taʿzīr bil-Māl" — is not valid according to the four major schools of jurisprudence.
That said, Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn al-Qayyim have held a different opinion on this matter.
