❖ Question

What is the ruling regarding reciting Surah Al-Fatihah during Salah?

❖ Answer

Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ‘ala Rasulillah, amma ba’d!

There are differences of opinion among the scholars regarding the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah in Salah. The details are as follows:

Different Opinions of the Scholars

Reciting Surah Al-Fatihah is not obligatory for anyone

  • For the Imam, the follower, or the individual praying alone — whether in silent or loud prayers — reciting Surah Al-Fatihah is not obligatory.
  • The only obligation is to recite whatever portion of the Qur’an one knows with ease.

Qur’an:
Surah Al-Muzzammil: 20
"Recite whatever is easy for you from the Qur’an."

Hadith:
«اِقْرَأْ مَا تَيَسَّرَ مَعَکَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ»
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith: 757; Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 397)

Reciting Surah Al-Fatihah is a pillar of Salah for everyone

  • For the Imam, the follower, and the one praying alone — whether in silent or loud prayers, whether they joined from the start or missed part of the prayer — reciting Surah Al-Fatihah is a rukn (pillar) of Salah.

Reciting Surah Al-Fatihah is a pillar for the Imam and the individual, but not for the follower

  • For the Imam and the one praying alone, it is a pillar.
  • For the follower, it is never obligatory — neither in silent nor in loud prayers.

Reciting Surah Al-Fatihah is a pillar for the follower only in silent prayers

  • For the Imam and the one praying alone, it is a pillar in all prayers.
  • For the follower, it is a pillar only in silent prayers, not in loud ones.

Preferred (Rajih) Opinion According to the Author

  • Reciting Surah Al-Fatihah is a rukn for the Imam, the follower, and the individual in both silent and loud prayers.
  • However, if someone joins the Imam in the position of ruku‘ (bowing), then Surah Al-Fatihah is waived for them.

Hadith:
«لَا صَلَاةَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَقْرَأْ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْکِتَابِ»
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith: 756; Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 394)

«مَنْ صَلَّی صَلَاةً لَمْ يَقْرَأْ فِيْهَا بِأُمِّ الْقُرْاٰنِ فَهِیَ خِدَاجٌ»
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 395)

  • “Khidaj” means an incomplete or invalid prayer — and this ruling is general.

Clarification of the Hadith of ‘Ubadah ibn al-Samit (RA)
After Fajr prayer, the Prophet ﷺ said to the companions:
«لَعَلَّکُمْ تَقْرَئُونَ خَلْفَ إِمَامِکُمْ»
They replied: “Yes.”
He ﷺ said:
«لَا تَفْعَلُوا إِلَّا بِأم القرآنِ، فَإِنَّهُ لَا صَلَاةَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَقْرَأْ بِهَا»
(Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 823; Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi, Hadith: 311; Musnad Ahmad 5/316)

Evidence for Waiving Surah Al-Fatihah for One Who Catches the Imam in Ruku‘
Hadith of Abu Bakrah (RA):

He found the Prophet ﷺ in the state of ruku‘ and joined directly. After the prayer, the Prophet ﷺ said:
«زَادَکَ اللّٰهُ حِرْصًا وَلاَ تَعُدْ»
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith: 783)

  • The Prophet ﷺ did not command him to repeat the rak‘ah, even though if Surah Al-Fatihah were obligatory in this case, he would have commanded it.

Rational Reasoning

  • If the standing position (qiyam), where Surah Al-Fatihah is recited, is missed, then the recitation is waived — just like wudu‘ washing of a hand is waived if the hand is amputated.
  • Similarly, if the Imam is found already in ruku‘, the follower has missed the standing, so Surah Al-Fatihah is also waived.

If the Hadith of ‘Ubadah (RA) Did Not Exist…

  • The stronger opinion would have been that in loud prayers, Surah Al-Fatihah is not obligatory for the follower, because the one who listens is rewarded like the one who recites.

Qur’an:
Surah Yunus: 89
Even though Musa (AS) made the supplication alone:
﴿وَقالَ موسى رَبَّنا إِنَّكَ ءاتَيتَ فِرعَونَ﴾ Surah Yunus: 88

  • Yet Allah said “your (both) supplication,” while Harun (AS) had only said “Ameen.”

Hadith: Is the Imam’s Recitation Sufficient for the Follower?
«مَنْ کَانَ لَهُ اِمَامٌ فَقِرَاءَ ةُ الْاِمَامِ لَهُ قِرَاءَ ةٌ»
(Musnad Ahmad 3/339; Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 850)

  • This hadith is mursal and weak, as mentioned by Hafiz Ibn Kathir in the introduction to his Tafsir.
  • Even those who accept it still oblige the follower to recite in silent prayers, which contradicts its unrestricted meaning.

If the Imam Does Not Pause

  • The follower may recite Surah Al-Fatihah alongside the Imam, as the Companions (RA) used to do.

Hadith:
«لَا تَفْعَلُوا إِلَّا بِأم القرآنِ، فَإِنَّهُ لَا صَلَاةَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَقْرَأْ بِهَا»
(Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 823; Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi, Hadith: 311; Musnad Ahmad 5/316)

Footnote

  • The respected Mufti’s statement that Surah Al-Fatihah is a pillar for everyone in Salah is correct.
  • However, he exempts it for the one who joins the Imam in ruku‘, while the evidences proving it as a pillar apply to such a person as well.

Note on the Hadith of Abu Bakrah (RA):

  • The statement «لَا تَعُدْ» has multiple possible meanings:
    ① Do not run.
② Do not count that rak‘ah.
③ Do not repeat the prayer.
  • When there are multiple possible interpretations, it is invalid to take one as definitive proof.

Principle:

  • If there is more than one possible meaning, the argument becomes invalid.

Thus, counting the rak‘ah for one who joins in ruku‘ is incorrect, because both the standing and the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah are missed — and when a pillar of Salah is missed, that rak‘ah is not valid.
