Shariʿah Ruling on Seeing Allah in a Dream Explained

❖ Ruling on Seeing Allah Almighty in a Dream ❖
Answer by: Fadhīlat al-Bāḥith Afzal Zaheer Jamali حفظه الله

❖ Question:

Can a person see Allah Almighty in a dream?

❖ Answer:

✿ The Dreams of the Noble Prophet ﷺ:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw Allah Almighty in a dream, as narrated by Sayyidunā Muʿādh ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه:

"أَنِّي قُمْتُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ… فَإِذَا أَنَا بِرَبِّي تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى فِي أَحْسَنِ صُورَةٍ..."
[Sunan at-Tirmidhī: 3235]

Translation:
“I stood during the night... and then I saw my Lord, Blessed and Exalted, in the most beautiful form.”

This dream is a sign of the status and closeness of the Prophet ﷺ to Allah ﷻ.

✿ Dreams of the Righteous Predecessors (Salaf Sāliḥīn):

Imām Ruqbah ibn Muṣqalah رحمه الله (a reliable Tabiʿ al-Tābiʿī) said:

"رأيت رب العزت في المنام فقال: و عزتي لاكرمن من مثوي سليمان التيمي"
[Kitāb al-Thiqāt by Ibn Ḥibbān: 4/301, Chain Authentic]

Translation:
“I saw the Lord of Might in a dream, and He said: ‘By My honor, I shall surely honor the abode of Sulaymān at-Taymī.’”

✿ Dreams of Ordinary Believers (Ummah after the Prophet ﷺ):

After the Prophet ﷺ, the dreams of the Ummah are considered speculative (ظنی) and cannot serve as binding evidence in Islamic rulings.

However, dreams of the righteous predecessors may be presented in support of the truth, provided their chains of narration are authentic or hasan li-dhātih (good in and of themselves).

❖ Key Points:

Seeing Allah in a dream is possible, but such visions are of special significance only in the case of the Prophet ﷺ.
② For other individuals, dreams are speculative and cannot be the basis of any Sharʿī ruling.
③ Such dreams may only be accepted as mubashshirāt (glad tidings), and nothing more.
