Shar‘i Ruling on the Prayer of One Who Stands Alone Behind the Row

Source: Fatawa ‘Ilmiyyah, Volume 1, Kitab al-Salah, Page 297

❖ Question:

If there is no space in the front row and a person stands alone behind it to perform Salah, and ends up completing the entire prayer alone, will his prayer be valid?

If it is not valid, then what should he do to rectify it?
Should he repeat the entire prayer after making Salām?

❖ Answer:

الحمد لله، والصلاة والسلام علىٰ رسول الله، أما بعد!

Authentic Ahadith clearly indicate that a person should not pray alone behind the row; such a prayer is not valid.

As mentioned in the Hadith:

"There is no prayer for the one who stands alone behind the row."
📘 Ibn Hibban, al-Mawārid: 401
📘 Ibn Majah: 1003

❗ Therefore:

If someone performs Salah while standing alone behind the row,
his prayer is not valid.

✔ What Must Be Done in This Case?

Such a person should:

– Complete the prayer,
– Make Salām,
– Then repeat the entire prayer from the beginning.

Because in light of authentic Hadith, his first prayer is not accepted.
