Ruling on Saying “Ya Jameel”

Question:
Allah ﷻ has 99 beautiful names, but the name “Al-Jameel” is not mentioned among them in the Qur’an. Is it permissible to say “Ya Jameel”?

Answer:
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh. Ammā baʿd!

The beautiful and perfect names of Allah ﷻ are not only mentioned in the Noble Qur’an, but many of them are also found in the noble Ahadith. One of these names is “Jameel”, which appears in an authentic Hadith.

Evidence from Hadith

The Noble Prophet ﷺ said:

"إن الله جميل يحب الجمال"
(Sahih Muslim: 91)

Translation: Indeed, Allah is beautiful and loves beauty.

In light of this Hadith, it is correct to call Allah ﷻ “Jameel” because this name is authentically proven from the Prophet ﷺ, even if it is not mentioned in the Qur’an.

When is Saying “Ya Jameel” Permissible?

Calling upon Allah ﷻ

  • If a person calls upon Allah ﷻ by saying “Ya Jameel”, it is permissible because this is an established name of Allah ﷻ.
  • The names of Allah are known not only from the Qur’an but also from the Ahadith; hence, a name mentioned in Hadith is also included among His attributes.

Calling a Human Being

  • If someone’s name is Jameel and he is present in front of you, you may call him by saying “Ya Jameel”.
  • The word “Ya” is a vocative particle used for addressing someone directly.

Example:

Speaking to a man named Jameel: “Ya Jameel, come here!” — This is valid and permissible.

When is Saying “Ya Jameel” Forbidden?

Calling an Absent Person with Belief in Unseen Hearing

  • If the person is not present and you believe he can hear your voice from anywhere, then saying “Ya Jameel” in this manner is haram and shirk.
  • This is because knowledge of the unseen and the ability to hear from all places belongs exclusively to Allah ﷻ.

Conclusion

① Saying “Ya Jameel” for Allah ﷻ is permissible, as the name “Jameel” is established from Hadith.
② Addressing a person named Jameel with “Ya Jameel” is permissible only if he is physically present and there is no belief in unseen hearing.
③ Calling an absent human “Ya Jameel” with the belief that he can hear you is shirk.
