❀ The Question

Just as we say “صلى الله عليه وسلم” with the name of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, is it permissible to say the same with the name of every Prophet?

Since in a hadith in Sahih Muslim, the Prophet ﷺ himself mentioned ‘Isa (عليه السلام) and other Prophets with the phrase “صلى الله عليه وسلم”, can we also do so? Is it permissible for every believer to say it?

❀ The Answer

Alhamdulillah, was-salatu was-salamu ‘ala Rasoolillah, amma ba‘d!

Yes, it is permissible for every Muslim—and even non-Muslims if they wish—to say “صلى الله عليه وسلم” after the name of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, as well as after the names of all other Prophets (عليهم السلام).

In Sahih Muslim, it is authentically reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself said “صلى الله عليه وسلم” after mentioning ‘Isa ibn Maryam (عليه السلام).

Since the Prophet ﷺ is a perfect role model for all, this practice is permissible and praiseworthy for the entire Ummah.

Allah ﷻ commands:

﴿وَاتَّبِعُوْہُ لَعَلَّکُمْ تَہْتَدُوْنَ﴾
“And follow him, that you may be guided.”

ھذا ما عندي والله أعلم بالصواب
(This is what I hold, and Allah knows best what is correct.)
