❀ Ruling on a Married Woman Cutting Her Hair – Shar‘i Perspective and Clarification of Sin ❀
Taken from: “Ahkam wa Masail – In Light of Qur’an and Hadith”, Volume 01, Page 525

❖ Question

What is the Shar‘i ruling for the following two cases:

① A married Muslim woman cuts her hair on her own choice.
② A married woman cuts her hair at the request of her husband, for beautification.

What do the commands of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ say in both situations, and how sinful is this act?

❖ Answer

Alḥamdulillāh, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. To proceed:

Cutting, trimming, shaving, or removing the head hair of a woman is not permissible in Sharī‘ah.

❖ Evidences for the Prohibition

This ruling is based on the following:

Ahadith that curse the practice of hair extensions (وَصْلُ الشَّعْر)
— By analogy, these show that altering the natural state of a woman’s hair without valid Shar‘i reason is condemned.

Hadiths concerning Ghusl Janābah
— These narrations grant special consideration to braided hair, which implies that long, natural hair is the expected norm for women.

❖ Ruling in Both Scenarios

Whether:

✘ A married woman cuts her hair out of personal desire, or
✘ She does so at her husband’s request for adornment—

In both cases, the act is impermissible and sinful.

❖ Exception: Hair Cutting in Ḥajj and ‘Umrah

✔ The only exception is during Ḥajj or ‘Umrah, when a woman is required to perform taqṣīr (trimming a small portion of the hair).
This is a Shar‘i obligation, and part of the rites of pilgrimage.

✅ Conclusion

✦ The cutting of a woman’s hair is not allowed under normal circumstances.
✦ Doing so for fashion, self-expression, or even at the husband’s request is unjustified.
✦ It goes against the natural dignity and Islamic guidelines for feminine appearance.
The only allowed case is ritual trimming during pilgrimage.
