If a person joins the congregational prayer late and finds that the first row is already full, is it permissible for him to stand alone in the second row?
Is there any Hadith stating that the prayer of one who stands alone behind the row is invalid?
If so, please explain in detail.
الحمد لله، والصلاة والسلام علىٰ رسول الله، أما بعد!
If someone joins the congregational prayer and finds that the first row is complete,
he may stand alone in the second row.
However, it should be noted that if he remains alone till the end of the prayer,
he must repeat his prayer.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ clearly stated:
"لَا صَلَاةَ لِمُنْفَرِدٍ خَلْفَ الصَّفِّ"
“There is no prayer for the one who prays alone behind the row.”
Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 1003
Authenticated by al-Bawṣīrī, Ibn Khuzaymah: Hadith 1569, Ibn Ḥibbān 2/40
Mawārid Hadiyyat al-Muslimeen, p. 88
This Hadith serves as clear evidence that praying alone behind the row is not valid,
and such a prayer must be repeated.
If a person sees the row is full and he is left alone behind it, he may:
◈ Pull someone from the front row to stand with him, thus forming a row together.
◈ This act is permissible and has precedent from the pious predecessors (Salaf).

Praying alone behind the row in congregational prayer is prohibited in Sharī‘ah.
◈ In such a case, one should either pull someone from the row to join him,
or wait until another person joins so they may form a row together.
◈ If one remains alone throughout the prayer,
his prayer is invalid and he must repeat it.
