Shar‘i Ruling and Boundaries Regarding Exercise for Women

(Excerpt from the book: “500 Questions & Answers for Women” based on the Fatwas of the Scholars of the Two Holy Mosques, translated by Hafiz Abdullah Saleem)

Question:

What is the Islamic ruling regarding a woman who exercises at home or outside the home?

❖ Answer:

If the exercise is conducted within the home, then there is no harm in it whatsoever. In fact, we advise women to exercise at home. Therefore, if a woman has duties and responsibilities within her home or household, she should first fulfill those.

Likewise, if a woman exercises together with other women in such a manner that no non-mahram men can see them while they exercise, then In shā’ Allāh, there is no harm in this either. Rather, we encourage women to exercise, because remaining inactive can at times lead to issues such as boredom, depression, weak memory, and physical weakness.

Hence, every Muslim man and woman is in need of exercise, as long as it remains within the boundaries set by the Sharī‘ah.
