❖ Question
If the congregational prayer is ongoing and the row is already complete, how should a person join the congregation in such a situation?
❖ Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!
If the row is full and there is no space available in the front rows, then:
✿ The person should stand alone behind the row.
✿ If another person joins him, that is better.
✿ Otherwise, whatever rakʿāt he prays alone behind the row, he should repeat them after the Imam completes the prayer.
◈ The Report About Pulling Someone From the Row
The narration regarding pulling someone from the front row to stand behind is weak in chain.
◈ Evidence From Authentic Ḥadīth
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
«مَنْ صَلّٰی خَلْفَ الصَّفِّ وَحْدَہٗ فَلْیُعِدْ صَلاَتَہٗ»
(Abū Dāwūd, Abwāb al-Ṣufūf, Bāb al-Rajul Yuṣallī Khalf al-Ṣaff Waḥdahu)
"Whoever prays alone behind the row should repeat his prayer."
This is an authentic ḥadīth.
◈ Position of the Scholars
✿ Some scholars state:
◈ If there is space in the row, then praying alone behind the row is not valid.
◈ If the row is full and no space is available, this is a case of necessity, so the person may stand alone behind the row, and the prayer will be valid.
◈ Pulling someone from the front row is not established from any authentic ḥadīth.
