✦ Shar‘i Limit for the Elevation of a Grave
✍ Written by: Imran Ayyub Lahori
Islam emphasizes simplicity and moderation in the construction of graves. The permissible height for a grave is up to one handspan from the ground.
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sent Hazrat Ali (رضي الله عنه) with the following instruction:
لا تدع تمثالا إلا طمسته ولا قبرا مشرفا إلا سويته
"Do not leave any statue without erasing it, nor any raised grave without leveling it."

✔ Imam al-Nawawi (رحمه الله):
The companions of Shafi‘i are unanimously of the opinion that raising the grave one handspan is mustahabb (recommended).
Al-Majmu‘: 5/296
✔ Shaykh al-Albani (رحمه الله):
The grave should be slightly elevated, i.e., about one handspan, and should not be leveled flat with the ground.

According to Sahih Ahadith and major scholars, it is recommended (mustahabb) for a grave to be slightly elevated — about one handspan. Raising it more than that or constructing elaborate structures is against the Sunnah.
