Shar‘i Limit on the Height of a Grave in Islam

✦ Shar‘i Limit for the Elevation of a Grave
Written by: Imran Ayyub Lahori

❖ A Grave Should Not Be Raised More Than One Handspan

Islam emphasizes simplicity and moderation in the construction of graves. The permissible height for a grave is up to one handspan from the ground.

Prophetic Command Regarding Grave Elevation

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sent Hazrat Ali (رضي الله عنه) with the following instruction:

لا تدع تمثالا إلا طمسته ولا قبرا مشرفا إلا سويته
"Do not leave any statue without erasing it, nor any raised grave without leveling it."

📚 Muslim: 969, Kitab al-Janaiz: Chapter on the Command to Level the Grave
📚 Abu Dawood: 3218
📚 Tirmidhi: 1049
📚 Nasa’i: 4/88
📚 Ahmad: 1/89

Height of the Prophet’s (ﷺ) Grave

Hazrat Jabir (رضي الله عنه) reported:

ورفع قبره عن الأرض قدر شبر
"The Prophet’s (ﷺ) grave was raised about one handspan above the ground."

📚 Hasan: Ahkam al-Janaiz: p. 195
📚 Bayhaqi: 3/410
📚 Ibn Hibban: 14/602 (No. 6635 in Al-Ihsan)
Authenticated by Shaykh Shu‘ayb Al-Arna’oot in his commentary on Sabil al-Salam: 3/377

This narration is supported by a mursal (chain-less) report from Salih bin Abi al-Akhdar (رحمه الله) who said:

رأيت قبر رسول الله شبرا أو نحو شبر
"I saw the Prophet’s (ﷺ) grave raised one handspan or close to that."

📚 Abu Dawood in al-Marasīl: 421

❖ Scholarly Opinions

Imam al-Shafi‘i (رحمه الله):
Only the soil dug from the grave should be used for burial, so the grave is not excessively elevated. It should be raised only one handspan above ground.
📘 Al-Umm: 1/245

Imam al-Nawawi (رحمه الله):
The companions of Shafi‘i are unanimously of the opinion that raising the grave one handspan is mustahabb (recommended).
📘 Al-Majmu‘: 5/296

Shaykh al-Albani (رحمه الله):
The grave should be slightly elevated, i.e., about one handspan, and should not be leveled flat with the ground.
📘 Ahkam al-Janaiz: p. 95

❖ Observation of the Prophet’s Grave by Imam Qasim (رحمه الله)

Imam Qasim (رحمه الله) described the graves of the Prophet (ﷺ), Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه), and ‘Umar (رضي الله عنه) as:

لا مشرفة ولا لاطئة
"Neither elevated nor level with the ground."

📚 Da‘eef: Da‘eef Abu Dawood: 705
📚 Abu Dawood: 3220, Kitab al-Janaiz: Chapter on Leveling the Grave
📚 Al-Hakim: 1/369

(Note: This narration is weak, but supports the general understanding.)

✔ Key Point:

According to Sahih Ahadith and major scholars, it is recommended (mustahabb) for a grave to be slightly elevatedabout one handspan. Raising it more than that or constructing elaborate structures is against the Sunnah.
