Shar‘i Inheritance Division: Case of Mangi Ladhoshah and His Heirs​

Question​

Mangi Ladhoshah passed away leaving the following heirs:


◈ Wife: Bibi Imam Zadi
◈ Four sisters: Bibi Mirzadi, Bibi Amna, Bibi Bachu, Bibi Zainab
◈ Cousin’s son: Syed Noor Shah


Later:

• Bibi Mirzadi passed away, leaving three sisters (Amna, Bachu, Zainab) and cousin’s sons (Wali Muhammad, Mataro, Wadal, Haji Shah Muhammad, Meral, Hasan).
• Then Bibi Amna passed away, leaving two sisters (Bachu and Zainab) and the same cousin’s sons.
• Later, Bachu and Zainab also passed away, and their only heirs were the children of the cousin mentioned above.

What is the distribution of inheritance according to the Shari‘ah of Muhammad ﷺ?

Answer​

Alhamdulillah, wa al-salatu wa al-salamu ‘ala Rasulillah, Amma ba‘d!


The Shar‘i procedure is:


① Funeral expenses are deducted.
② Debts are paid.
③ A valid will, if present, is executed up to one-third of the estate.
④ The remainder is distributed among heirs according to Shari‘ah.

Distribution of Mangi Ladhoshah’s Estate​

Total estate = 1 rupee

• Wife (Bibi Imam Zadi): 4 annas (25%)
• Four sisters (Mirzadi, Amna, Bachu, Zainab): 10 annas 8 paisa (≈66.66%) equally
• Cousin’s son (Noor Shah, as residuary): 1 anna 4 paisa (≈8.34%)

After Mirzadi’s Death (16.665%)​

• Three sisters (Amna, Bachu, Zainab): 11.11% (≈3.703% each)
• Six cousin’s sons: 5.555% (≈0.925% each)

After Amna’s Death (20.368%)​

• Two sisters (Bachu, Zainab): 13.578% (≈6.789% each)
• Six cousin’s sons: 6.79% (≈1.131% each)

After Bachu’s Death​

• Sister Zainab: 1 anna 1 paisa (her share)
• Remaining estate divided equally among cousin’s sons.

After Zainab’s Death (6 annas 6½ paisa ≈ 41.66%)​

• All six cousin’s sons inherit equally.
