Shar‘i Guidelines for Discussing Qur’ān with Non-Maḥram Individuals

Shar‘i Principles for Discussing Qur’ānic Verses with a Non-Maḥram
Answered by: Fadīlat al-Shaykh ʿAbd al-Wakīl Nāṣir ḥafiẓahullāh

❖ Question:

Is it permissible to discuss Qur’ānic verses with a non-maḥram (someone with whom marriage is not permanently unlawful), especially in a welfare group setting and not privately?
Also, is it permissible to speak on scientific aspects of the Qur’an?

❖ Answer:

Allah Ta‘ālā says:

“وَقُلْنَ قَوْلًا مَعْرُوفًا”
“And speak in an honourable manner.”

[Surah al-Aḥzāb: 32]

✦ Principles for Conversation:

Maʿrūf Speech (Honourable Conversation)
✔ The speech should be dignified, not emotional or provocative.
✔ It should be free from softness in tone that may affect the heart.

Pure Intention
✔ If the intention is purely for learning or teaching the Qur’an,
✔ And no unlawful desire is involved,
✔ Then in shā’ Allāh it is permissible.

Shar‘ī Limits Must Be Observed
✔ Maintain ḥijāb (modesty and boundaries).
✔ Keep the discussion brief and relevant.
No personal interaction outside the intended topic.

✦ Scientific Interpretations of Qur’ānic Verses

If one is discussing scientific insights from the Qur’an, then the following conditions must be met:

Conformity with Sharī‘ah
✔ Interpretations must not contradict clear Qur’ānic meanings or Prophetic guidance.

Respect for the Understanding of the Salaf
✔ Avoid interpretations that oppose the understanding of the Companions or pious predecessors.

Respect for Ḥadīth
✔ Scientific explanations must not lead to denial or reinterpretation of authentic aḥādīth.

❖ Summary

✔ Discussing Qur’ānic verses with a non-maḥram in a group setting is permissible within proper limits if:
– The intention is sound,
– The conversation remains respectful and non-personal,
– And shar‘ī etiquettes (ḥijāb, tone, and purpose) are observed.

✔ Scientific discussion is allowed if it does not violate the framework of Sharī‘ah or the understanding of the early generations.
