In a village, two congregational (Jāmiʿ) mosques had been functioning for a long time. Due to certain reasons, the need arose to consolidate the two into one, and hence all worshippers began performing Jumuʿah and congregational prayers in only one of the mosques, abandoning the other.
What is the Shar‘ī ruling regarding the land of the abandoned mosque?
Should it still be treated as a mosque, or can it now be treated as ordinary land?
The abandoned mosque remains a mosque in the eyes of Islamic law. It does not lose its sanctity merely due to disuse or abandonment.
✔ One mosque may be designated as the Jāmiʿ (main congregational) mosque,
✔ While the other (abandoned) mosque may still be used for daily prayers (ṣalāh).
It is not permissible to utilize the mosque for any worldly or non-religious purposes.
Even if the mosque is located far from the inhabited area, it should remain accessible for worship and preserved for acts of devotion.
