Source: Fatāwā ʿIlmiyyah, Volume 3, Issues of Tawḥīd and Sunnah, p. 61

Question

What is the Sharʿi status of seeing the Noble Prophet ﷺ in a dream or in the state of wakefulness? (A Questioner)

Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʾammā baʿd:

Seeing the Prophet ﷺ in a Dream

❀ It is possible to see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a dream.

❀ For details on this subject, refer to the following sources:

  • Monthly al-Ḥadīth Hazro, Issue 40, pp. 12–13
  • Monthly al-Ḥadīth Hazro, Issue 66, p. 4

❀ The Companions رضي الله عنهم saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in their dreams, and these dreams are considered equivalent to the status of ḥadīth, thus serving as valid Sharʿi evidence.

Dreams of Other Members of the Ummah

❀ After the era of the Companions رضي الله عنهم, until the Day of Judgment, if anyone claims to have seen the Prophet ﷺ in a dream, such a claim cannot serve as Sharʿi evidence.

❀ If such a dream contains anything that contradicts:

  • ◈ Qurʾān
  • ◈ Ḥadīth
  • ◈ Ijmāʿ (Consensus)
  • ◈ Āthār of the Salaf al-Ṣāliḥīn

…then that dream will be deemed false and rejected.

Seeing the Prophet ﷺ in a State of Wakefulness

❀ Seeing the Prophet ﷺ in this worldly life while awake is not established by:

  • ◈ Qurʾān
  • ◈ Ḥadīth
  • ◈ Ijmāʿ (Consensus)

❀ Furthermore, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has departed from this world. (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ḥadīth no. 5414)

Therefore, the claim of seeing the Prophet ﷺ in wakefulness is false and invalid.
