❖ Question
What is the ruling regarding women visiting graveyards?
❖ Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!
In Islām, the issue of women visiting graveyards carries different rulings, explained through Prophetic traditions and fiqhī principles.
✿ Traveling Specifically to Visit Graveyards
❀ The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ explicitly allowed undertaking a journey only for three mosques, as he said:
«لاَ تُشَدُّ الرِّحَالُ إِلاَّ إِلٰی ثَلاَثَةِ مَسَاجِدَ»
“Do not set out on a journey except to three mosques.”
(al-ḥadīth)
This command applies equally to men and women, meaning no one is permitted to undertake a journey specifically for visiting graveyards or any other place besides these three sacred mosques.
✿ Women Visiting Nearby Graveyards without Travel
❀ If a woman goes to a nearby graveyard without travel, there is also Sharʿī guidance. If women make visiting graves a frequent practice, then curse has been mentioned for such women.
❀ The Prophet ﷺ said:
«لَعَنَ رَسُوْلُ اﷲِﷺ زَوَّارَاتِ الْقُبُوْر»
“The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ cursed the women who frequently visit graves.”
(Jāmiʿ at-Tirmidhī – Abwāb al-Janāʾiz – Bāb mā jāʾa fī karāhiyat ziyārat al-qubūr an-nisāʾ)
✿ Meaning of "Zawwārāt"
❀ In these narrations, the term “zāʾirāt” is understood as “zawwārāt,” referring to women who repeatedly and excessively visit graves.
❀ This is based on a principle:
«کَمَا قَرَّرَ فِیْ مَوْضِعِهِ أَنَّ الْعَامَ یُبْنَی عَلَی الْخَاصِ ، وَأَنَّ الْمُطْلَقَ یُحْمَلُ عَلَی الْمُقَیَّدِ إِلاَّ بِثَبَتٍ ، وَلاَ ثَبَتَ هٰهُنَا»
Meaning:
◈ The general ruling is restricted by the specific.
◈ The absolute ruling is carried to the restricted, unless there is a clear proof.
◈ Here, there is no such proof to exclude this restriction.
❖ Conclusion
❀ Therefore, the ruling on women visiting graveyards is as follows:
➊ If with travel: It is Sharʿīly impermissible, as the Prophet ﷺ limited travel only to three mosques.
➋ If done repeatedly or excessively: It falls under the curse mentioned by the Prophet ﷺ.
➌ If occasional and with Sharʿī manners: Some scholars have allowed it, provided there is no risk of fitnah.
