If the urine or dung of a lawful (edible) animal gets onto one’s clothes and it is difficult or nearly impossible to avoid—such as in rural or village settings—
① Is it permissible to perform prayer in such clothes?
② Is the urine or dung of edible animals pure or impure?
According to Islamic teachings, the urine and dung of edible animals (mākūl al-laḥm) is pure (ṭāhir). The ruling is based on the following evidences:
① Hadith Evidence on Purity:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform prayer in sheep pens (مَرَابِضِ الْغَنَمِ), which clearly establishes that the dung and urine of such animals is not considered impure.
② Hadith Evidence on Use for Treatment:
The Prophet ﷺ instructed certain companions to drink the milk and urine of camels as a remedy.
(Narrated in Sunan al-Nasāʾī and others)
This also proves the permissibility and purity of urine of lawful animals.
According to the Ḥanafī school of thought, even if a person’s clothing contains najāsat ghaleeẓah (major impurity), such as human feces, to the extent of a dirham sharʿī (roughly palm-sized), the prayer is still valid.
➤ However, if one can wash the impurity, it is preferable (afḍal) to do so.
➤ If washing is not possible, there is no Sharʿi harm in praying with such clothes.
"Lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh. Wa hādhā ghalat jiddan"
("There is no might nor power except with Allah, and this view is a grave error.")
— A refutation of those who incorrectly consider it impure.
✔ The urine and dung of edible (ḥalāl) animals is pure (ṭāhir).
✔ It is permissible to pray in clothes affected by such substances.
✔ Natural distaste (karāhat ṭabʿiyyah) is a separate matter. If the clothing is washed, it is better—but washing is not Sharʿi obligation.
