Khatm Sharif is done in the name of Allah. Where did the Prophet ﷺ forbid it? What is its ruling?
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā baʿd:
It is true that during Khatm Sharif, the name of Allah is mentioned. However, merely mentioning Allah’s name does not make an act correct unless it is proven from the Prophet ﷺ.
The Sharʿi status of any act depends entirely on its being authentically established from the Prophet ﷺ.
◈ If a person recites Qul Huwa Allāhu Aḥad while slaughtering an animal — indeed, this is the name of Allah — but would such slaughter be valid according to Sharīʿah?
◈ Similarly, if one recites Qul Huwa Allāhu Aḥad during ablution (wuḍūʾ), would that act be correct?
Both these actions, though involving the name of Allah, are not valid in Sharīʿah because they are not proven from the Prophet ﷺ.
Any act not proven from the Prophet ﷺ is rejected (mardūd).
As the Prophet ﷺ said:
«مَنْ أَحْدَثَ فِیْ أَمْرِنَا ہٰذَا مَا لَیْسَ مِنْہُ فَہُوَ رَدٌّ»
(Mishkāt – Bāb al-Iʿtiṣām bil-Kitāb wa al-Sunnah – al-Faṣl al-Awwal)
And in another narration:
«مَنْ عَمِلَ عَمَلاً لَیْسَ عَلَیْہِ أَمْرُنَا فَہُوَ رَدٌّ»
When the Prophet ﷺ declares an act rejected, it falls under prohibited matters.
Khatm Sharif, since it is not established from the Prophet ﷺ, is not acceptable.
In religion, only that which is authentically proven from the Prophet ﷺ is valid.

Answer:

Foundational Principle:
Any act not proven from the Prophet ﷺ is rejected (mardūd).
