If Eid and Jumu‘ah fall on the same day, does performing the Eid prayer suffice and exempt one from attending Jumu‘ah? Is Jumu‘ah still obligatory in that case? Kindly explain with reference to the Qur’ān and Sunnah.
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!
When Eid and Jumu‘ah fall on the same day, the Sharīʿah provides a concession:
Whoever has performed the Eid prayer is allowed to skip Jumu‘ah and instead offer Ṣalāt al-Ẓuhr.
Sayyidunā Zayd ibn Arqam رضي الله عنه reports:
“During the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Eid and Jumu‘ah occurred on the same day. After leading the Eid prayer, the Prophet ﷺ gave permission regarding Jumu‘ah and said:
((مَنْ شَاءَ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ فَلْيُصَلِّ))
‘Whoever wishes to perform Jumu‘ah may do so.’”

The narrator Iyās ibn Abī Ramlah is considered thiqah (trustworthy) and ṣadūq by the majority of Muḥaddithīn. Therefore, labeling him as "unknown (majhūl)" is incorrect.
The book "Aḥkām al-ʿĪdayn" by al-Firyābī (pp. 211–218) provides multiple supporting narrations that confirm and reinforce this ruling.
◈ If Eid and Jumu‘ah occur on the same day, then Jumu‘ah is not obligatory for those who performed the Eid prayer.
◈ The Prophet ﷺ granted exemption from Jumu‘ah in such a case.
◈ One may choose to perform Jumu‘ah or suffice with Ṣalāt al-Ẓuhr.
