Domestic Donkeys and Filth-Eating Animals Are Ḥarām Until Cleansed of Impurity
By: Imran Ayyub Lahori
Ḥaḍrat al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib (رضي الله عنه) narrated:
"أَمَرَنَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فِي غَزْوَةِ خَيْبَرَ أَنْ تُلْقَى الْحُمُرُ الأَهْلِيَّةُ نِيئَةً وَنَضِيحَةً، ثُمَّ لَمْ يَأْمُرْنَا بِأَكْلِهَا بَعْدُ"
"On the day of Khaybar, the Prophet ﷺ commanded us to throw away the meat of domestic donkeys, both raw and cooked, and he never permitted us to eat it afterward."
[Al-Bukhārī: 4226 – Kitāb al-Maghāzī: Bāb Ghazwat Khaybar; Muslim: 1938; Al-Nasāʾī: 4338]
Animals that habitually eat filth and impurities (jallālah) are ḥarām to eat until they are kept away from filth long enough for its effects to disappear (taste, smell, and impurity).
This ruling is derived from other authentic aḥādīth and the practice of the Companions, such as Ibn ʿUmar (رضي الله عنهما) keeping a jallālah chicken confined for a few days before eating it.

2. Filth-Eating Animals (Jallālah)

- Domestic donkey meat is permanently prohibited.
- Filth-eating animals are prohibited only while the filth remains in their system; they become ḥalāl after purification.
