◈ Ruling on Procrastination in Fulfilling Loan Obligations ◈
Anyone who is financially capable of repaying a loan yet deliberately delays payment after it is due is committing a ḥarām (forbidden) act.
This is based on the narration by Abū Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) in which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Delaying repayment by a wealthy person is injustice. And if one of you is appointed to pursue a repayment from a wealthy person, he should go after him.”
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ḥadīth 2287; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1564/33
Anyone upon whom a debt is due must take immediate and serious steps to fulfill it, especially in matters of ḥuqūq al-ʿibād (rights of fellow human beings).
He must not delay with the thought that he has time, for death can strike unexpectedly, and he may pass away with debts unsettled, remaining in a state of liability and accountability.
