Sharʿi Ruling on Amulets (Taʿwīdh): Permissible or Shirk?
Source: Ahkam wa Masail, Vol. 01, in the light of Qur’an and Hadith, p. 501
❖ Question
Our household is going through many difficulties. In this situation, some amulets (taʿwīdhāt) are being used which contain Sūrat al-Fātiḥah, Āyat al-Kursī, and other writings. Some amulets are in the form of numbers and grids, some are hung on doors, while others are placed in water to be drunk. Does this fall under shirk? In Fatāwā Barkātiyyah, amulets have been declared permissible.
❖ Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʿAmma Baʿd!
We pray that:
✿ Allah ﷻ removes all your worries.
✿ Allah ﷻ rectifies the condition of your household.
✿ Sharʿi Ruling on Amulets
- Amulets (taʿwīdhāt) are not established from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
- However, ruqyah (blowing after reciting) is established from him ﷺ, provided it does not contain shirk or kufr.
✿ Sunnah-Based Spiritual Remedies
Instead of amulets, adopt the following:
- Recite Sūrat al-Baqarah frequently in the house.
- After prayers, at night, and before sleeping, recite regularly:
❀ Sūrat al-Ikhlāṣ
❀ Sūrat al-Falaq
❀ Sūrat al-Nās
In shā’ Allāh, this will be of great benefit.
✿ Morning Spiritual Practice
Every morning, recite at least 100 times:
"لاَ اِلٰہَ اِلاَّ اﷲُ وَحْدَہُ لاَ شَرِیْکَ لَہُ لَہُ الْمُلْکُ وَلَہُ الْحَمْدُ وَہُوَ عَلٰی کُلِّ شَیْئٍ قَدِیْر"
By doing so, in shā’ Allāh, you will remain protected from satanic influences.
