❀ Sharʿī Ruling on Wuḍū for Ṭawāf and Its Evidence ❀

❖ Question

Is wuḍū a condition for performing ṭawāf?

❖ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

Yes, wuḍū is required for ṭawāf, because ṭawāf has been likened to ṣalāh (prayer) in the aḥādīth.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

«اَلطَّوَافُ بِالْبَيْتِ صَلاَةٌ اِلاَّ اَنَّ اﷲَ اَبَاحَ فِيْهِ الْکَلاَمَ»
(Irwāʾ al-Ghalīl, vol. 1, p. 154)
"Ṭawāf around the House is ṣalāh, except that Allah has permitted speech in it."

According to this ḥadīth, ṭawāf is like ṣalāh, with the only difference being that speech is allowed during ṭawāf. Since ṣalāh requires wuḍū, therefore ṭawāf also requires wuḍū.

By this same principle, wuḍū is also necessary for Ṣalāt al-Janāzah (funeral prayer), because it too is called “ṣalāh.” And if it is ṣalāh, then wuḍū is obligatory for it as well.
